From a fertility standpoint, the main chemicals to watch out for in skin care and hair care products are:

  • “Fragrance”:  This is often a cocktail of chemicals including prohibited phthalates.  Natural essential oil fragrance is typically not a problem
  • Parabens (propylparaben, butylparaben; ethylparaben; butylparaben)
  • diethylphthalate (other phthalates have been banned in cosmetics and personal care products).
  • chemical sunscreens, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Some good fragrance-free and paraben-free products available on Amazon:

Moisturizer

My favorite face moisturizer is HoneySkin Organics Aloe Vera + Honey Face and Body Cream.  The first five ingredients are Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil, Cocoa Butter, Manuka Honey, and Shea Butter. Once absorbed it is very light but also calms redness and iritation extremely well.  It costs around $15 for 2oz or $25 for 4 oz.

Two other great brands with natural ingredients are Acure and Christina Moss Organics.

A decent low-cost option is Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream ($8 for 4oz).  Its ingredients are not as natural as the other moisturizers listed here (and it has a rating of 3 on EWG’s database), but it is an inexpensive way to avoid phthalates, parabens, fragrance, and formaldehydes (and many sufferers of eczema swear by it).

If you are looking for a product with more active anti-aging ingredients try Andalou Naturals Hyaluronic DMAE Lift and Firm Cream.  ($20 for 2 oz, rating of 2 EWG)

Cleanser

HoneySkin Organics also make an excellent phthalate-free and paraben-free cleanser.  It typically costs $15 for a small bottle, but it is very good for calming irritation and a little goes a long way.  Vanicream cleanser is a great lower-cost option at $9.

Body Lotion

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion has been the best-selling body lotion in the U.S. for many years.  It is not exactly natural (with petrolatum as a main ingredient), but has no particularly troubling ingredients.  At $5 for a large bottle, it is hard to beat. If you prefer a scented lotion, Babo Botanicals Lavender Meadowsweet Lotion is sweet and calming.  Its main ingredients are chamomile and rose flower water, coconut oil, cocoa seed butter, and shea butter.

Sunscreen

Elta MD Sunscreens are somewhat expensive but beloved by many as non-irritating physical sunscreens that do not leave a greasy white film.   EltaMD makes several different formulations though, some of which contain chemical sunscreens.  Choose one where the active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, such as EltaMD UV Physical Broad Spectrum.  Another great physical sunscreen without parabens is Blue Lizard Sensitive.

Foundation

Replacing make-up is a much lower priority than replacing skin care, because a smaller amount is used and it is rarely scented.  When you do need to buy new foundation, Vichy Dermafinish is a great product, with no parabens or phthalates.
